The dried unprocessed root of rehmannia, sold as hard greyish-black irregular slices, drier and less sticky than its steamed sibling shu di. Bitter-sweet and cooling in character, it darkens the broth and features in cooling soups and the bitter herbal teas of the south.

In Cantonese food therapy it is used in cooling pots to clear heat, cool the blood and nourish yin and fluids, the cooler counterpart to prepared rehmannia.
