The small flat glossy seed of the wild spiny jujube, red-brown and lens-shaped, sold whole at dispensaries. It is usually dry-toasted and crushed before going into the pot, releasing a mild nutty note; toasting is held to strengthen its calming character.

Traditional food therapy

The tradition's sleep seed: toasted zao ren is brewed to nourish the heart, settle the spirit for rest and check night-time sweating.

Cautions — read first

  • It has a calming, sleep-inducing effect. If you already take sleeping tablets or sedatives, ask first and do not stack it on top yourself.
  • Take care where a pathogen is full, where fire is pent up, or with leaking diarrhoea
  • Pregnant women should ask first

Preparation

Toast them lightly until fragrant, crush them and add them to the pot. The toasted seed is held to settle the spirit better.
