What the tradition says

The tradition holds that this is 護心活血、驅風驅寒、行氣活血, that it protects the heart, moves blood and qi, and drives out wind and cold.

After a caesarean

開刀視情況而定, after a caesarean the timing is case-dependent. Ginger is the single most disputed ingredient in caesarean confinement: one HK practitioner source says avoid it entirely and substitute 陳皮.

雜貨舖Cooked rice2 bowls
街市Fresh ginger1 tbsp (minced)

雜貨舖Cooking oil1 tbsp (15 ml)

Method

  1. Fry the diced ginger in a little oil.
  2. Add the rice and about a teaspoon of salt and work the ginger through.
  3. Clear a well, pour in the beaten egg, wait one to two seconds, then fold it through until set.
